It has been 162 years since a school of drawing and painting was founded in Kamenický Šenov in 1856. It was founded by a painter Johan Dvořáček, who also became its first director. It was initiated by glass and chandelier company owners. These were the foundations of today’s glass school which strives to maintain exceptional relationship with glass and lights manufacturers in this region and beyond, as it was at the beginning. The most important social partners of the school are Preciosa Lighting Kamenický Šenov, Moser Karlovy Vary, Crystalex Nový Bor and a number of smaller glass producers and refiners. We train and educate future employees of these companies and make sure that the teaching program includes all tradit ional gl ass skills, such as glass cutting, painting, engraving and designing lights, but also knowledge of new technologies and computer methods, which have become a significant part of the glass industry. Lots of the graduates of SUPŠS go on to study at art universities, as it used to be in the past when our school stood at the origin of such legends of Czech and international glass art as are René Roubíček, Jiří Šuhájek, Ivo Rozsypal and many other.
The long tradition and hard work of our predecessors are a motivation for us, the teachers, to maintain the high standard education in all fields of glass and lights production, technology, but also in design. We keep the school among chosen elite educational institutions and the UNESCO patronage that SUPSŠ Kamenický Šenov holds since 2005 is a proof of that.
